pre op overearting
Hello to all:
This is Catherine from Rocheser, NY. Ever since I have rec’d
official approval from my insurance company, I have been overeating
on fast food. Is this normal? Are there any suggestions out there?
Thanks so much.

It’s so common it’s even got a name. It’s called last meal syndrome,
and I know I had it <G>. Did your doc say you had to lose weight
before your surgery?
You will be doing yourself and your doc a favor if you can start
focusing on low carb foods, because it will shrink the liver and
make the surgery easier for both of you. I had to "not gain weight"
- and even that was a booger for me. I’ve heard of others who had
to lose weight per their surgeon, and I’d probably still be sitting
here at 250 lbs if I’d had to lose weight.

Hi my name is Elizabeth and I had my Gastric By-Pass this past Wed. 8/25/04.
Came home on Friday and feel great. Before my doctor would do surgery, I was
instructed to loose 10% of my body fat. It was hard but I did it, got to 240
lbs. Then that last appointment, when you get all your pre-op check-ups, last
visit with doctor before the big day, she tells me that if I gained any weight
between that day and the day of surgery, she would cancel me. She explained it
was too hard for her to work with a fatty liver. Well I was really upset
because in my mind, I had pictured all of my "last meals" Well I did have a few
of those "last meals" and thought I would slide thru, but that last week was
horrible, my scale showed a 1/2 lb to a pound weight gain. I was sickened!!! I
ate practically nothing, just drank water that last week, It was the most
worrysome week I ever had. The mental anguish was not worth it at all. Yes, I
slid thru but my mind was a mess, not a good way to go into
surgery. Pam’s advise is the best, make it easy on yourself, go low carbs, I
wish I had. Thanks everyone for all your help and it’s great having this site
to ask any questions at all. Elizabeth

I’m going to guess it’s pretty normal - even though I’m sure most doctors would
advise against it. Before mine, I was thinking, I’ll never get to eat this
stuff again so I’m going for it while I still can. Not the healthiest attitude,
but that’s how it worked for me. Of course, once I had the surgery, I didn’t
even want fast food anymore, to greasy and makes my stomach upset.

Thanks Pam. No my doctor has not mentioned anything about losing weight prior to
surgery. For the most part, I have been maintaining my weight within a 5 lbs
radius. I have been exercising and it was this weekend that I couldn’t stop
eating. I had a abdominal scan and my liver, spleen, gall bladder and kidneys
were in great shape. I didn’t know about the low carb to shrink your liver. So I
am going to keep that in mind.
I appreciated all who responded to my note. It makes me feel that I am not
alone.

I had to lose weight 25-30 lbs before surgery and if I gained any, they would
cancel the surgery. A low carb diet does shrink the liver and makes it easier
for the doctors to do the surgery. Plus since I had to do a prep before surgery
I stopped eating heavy 3-4 days before the surgery and had mainly liquids. Many
of the people now seeing my surgeon are put on an all liquid diet anywhere from
1-5 weeks before surgery.
