have surgery date and questions

I went thru meeting with pschologist and dietician and surgeon and
all is a go-the surgical coordinator than gave me a surgery date mid
October which actually was a little soooner than I expected but I
was very glad. She gave me a whole bunch of instruction, some of the
infor was in the booklets I got from them but she made me aware.
She said that I need a pre-op clearance from my primary care
physician which I will change to a Dr that is affiliated with the
surgeon’s hospital-but she said it should be done 2 weks prior to
have a fresh rule out of pregnancy-I realize they are being cautious-
Is this typical-She also said I would need to call the hospital the
day before surgery to make sure all is a go-I thought she mentioned
the insurance as well-wouldn’t be able to know that sooner-I have
oxford freedom HMO and from what I understand they are one of the
good ones for approval-I certainly meet all the requirements-oxford
says they approve case by case-wouldn’t I know about approval before

the eve of surgery-maybe I misunder stood???–I feel like I should
be eating real healthy and exercising a little before surgery-the
dietician says some people pig out like this is their last meal-I
feel like I want to feel my best before surgery so I am thinking
this way although I am a little nervous with questions and I find it
hard to be perfect-although I gave up chocolat and seltzer to try to
get used to changes ahead of time–I would love to hear from people
regarding these issues-

I think the call to the hospital to make sure it is ok is not about your
insurance. I think it is about doctor, hospital room, nurses
availability——such if there was a nurse’s strike they would postpone your
    surgery and use
the nurses for emergencies only. Or if there was a big accident, or flu
epedimic—-not that any of those things would happen —-but it is courtesy
    the
hospitals have asked all doctors to tell their patients——-it also puts into
gear the administrative office so they will be sure to have all your data
ready—they may ask if there has been any changes in your information
(insurance, phone numbers, who to reach etc.) Sounds like you are doing great
    –and I
do think you are being wise to try to stay in good shape for the surgery. I
think you have nothing to worry about —– I wish you great success on your
surgery —-and I will be praying for you.

I have been contiplating this surgery for four years!!! Doctor orderd it
four years ago! Well, I lost my weight on Dr. Atkins and my appt is Sept 14 to
see the surgeon. I am so nervous –my blood pressure is up. I think I am going
to try to talk to someone (a professional counselor) before then. My
situation is difficult and different ——– as all of us are different—- I
    hope
you have a fantastic support group set up—-family friends————-I am
trying to do my surgery as a secret—long story —and it is not the
secretiveness that is bothering me —-it is the lack of support that is
    bothering
me. I want someone to hold my hand and tell me everything will be alright and
say they will pray for me.

But the call the night before to the hospital is just a courtesy to the
hospiral to tell them you are coming and if they had to change the schedule
around a bit to let you know. Maybe your question would be —-well if
    something
happens wouldn’t the hospital call me??? Again it is just a courtesy —in
many cases hospitals do call patients to inform them of changes but in some
cases the hospital was not able to contact you or just did not have the
manpower. Also some people are a no-show for a surgery and calling let’s them
    know
you are planning to be there.

Kind of like an RSVP to a party!! You have been invited and are just calling
to confirm your reservations——even airlines ask you to call ahead for
updates on flights. So you are going to a life changing party—– and you are
in good hands —all the correct staff will be there and take very good care
of you. Keep us posted please—-we who are waiting are anxious and waiting
for the details!! So far most responses have been that they had a good time
    at the party.

I am waiting to see the surgeon Sept 14 to get my invitation!!

My surgeon made me lose a certain amount of weight before surgery and if I
gained anything it would be canceled. I was doing a little exercise but I wish
I had done more walking/exercise because I think it would have made my recovery
easier. Many doctors are putting patients on liquid diets or healthy diets
before the surgery. It is suppose to make it easier for recovery and for the
doctor since it decreases the size of your liver. I had my insurance approval
way in advance. It was handled by the administration staff of the surgeons. I
had a preop appointment 2 weeks before surgery at the hospital where blood
workup and everything was done. Maybe the hospital will have something like
    that.

I had little family support and only told a few people. Those not as supportive
became better once they saw it was working and I was losing weight. I had a
good support team at work and the church. I will be praying for you, just let me
know the date. Will even send a card or something if I know the address. Good
luck with you appointment on the 14th. Check the group that is doing the
surgeries. They probably have a support group and you can attend before the
surgery and then you have more supporting you if no one else knows.

We’ll be happy to hold your hand! Just keep posting - and heaven knows, a
great number of us have been through it! Sometimes it’s easier to find a
group like this to support you because we’ve been through a lot of the same
things. Many of us know from personal experience which of our doc’s
recommendations have worked and which haven’t. <G> If you’ve got a
background with Atkins, you’re in good shape.
