Congrats, Miki! Quickly you’ll be on the losing side, and amazed.
Once you are, don’t hesitate to stay in touch with us, and as you
get a little bit further out, may I recommend you join the Graduate-
OSSG list. You have to be a year out from your surgery before you
can post, but you can lurk as long as you want. It helps to have an
understanding of the issues that are faced by people who are much
further out in their surgeries - from 1-20+ years are covered on the
    list.

Take care, don’t forget to take your chapstick <G>.

Thanks Andy and Pam, And I already have the chapstick packed. LOL. I will
definitely be asking advice as things come along. I am ready to be a loser.
LOL As I told my husband, "I am gonna be less of a woman."

    Pam,
How do you access the Graduate OOSG list. I am 16 months post op and would love
to hear what others are going through at this stage and later. I am a great
loser also.. down 136 pounds and feeling just WONDERFUL… Thanks for all your
encouragment and support to everyone on this site.

  5. Jamey Lancaster Says:

That link should get you there, joy. I joined at about 5 months
post-op, but didn’t post until 12 months out. YOu’ll need to do a
brief introduction on your first post, but at 16 months out, you’ll
be welcomed with open arms. <G> I think we’re having the great milk
debate, round 85,000, and the magic bullet redoux right now <G>.

Oh, and other recent topics have been osteoporosis, osteopenia,
    peripheral neuropathy, etc.

Got all my supplies today for when I get home from hospital. Got my protein
mix and chewable vitamins and chewable calcium. I have always had too much
iron in my blood, so I will let the doctors deal with that, and sugar free jello
and puddings and applesauce. Lots of water and Propel and Splenda. Got the
TV set up in the bedroom and lots of books to read. Got to make my gowns this
weekend. Went shopping and all they had was little see thru stuff and
flannel and I hate flannel.. LOL Got my lotion and all the toiletries and think
    I
am ready. Dr. suggested boost high protein and ensure high protein for the
first two weeks after clear liquids, so got that too. I think I am prepared.
Even got me a little disc player for a few CD’s with earphones so I don’t
disturb anyone. Got my list of meds and diabetic testing stuff. The list the
support group at the hospital gave me is pretty complete. Even bought me some
loose socks so my feet don’t freeze and my ankles don’t swell. LOL I always
freeze in the hospital for some reason. So all you out there wish me luck and

send prayers for me. God is with me because I have no fears or apprehensions,
except that my husband is a very serious heart patient and any stress makes him
have heart attacks. And he is already plenty stressed out over this. Thank
God Cardiac Care is right across the hall, so they can put him in a bed too if
it becomes necessary. I told him if it came to it, we could be roomies. LOL

  8. Jamey Lancaster Says:

Good deal! If you find that the protein drinks are absolutely awful, I can
give you the email address of a place to order the kind that are really best
for us. Very low carb/sugar, good absorbable protein, and of the 84 or so
offers, some of them are bound to taste good to you. <G> And they will send
samples for $2 apiece. I’ve been doing protein drinks for 2 years now, and
can really tell a difference when I don’t do them.

    I know you’ll do well.

    Take care,

    Pam

    Hi Miki,

Just wanted to wish you (and your husband) good luck on your upcoming
surgery. I’m still about 2 months away from mine but I know how
excited and worried I will probably be when the time comes. Please
keep us posted on your progress. May God keep you both in the palm
    of His hand.

    Until next time…

I don’t know if you do deductions on your taxes, but as long as a doctor
prescribes, we can now deduct supplements, including protein, I believe. My
    accountant did last year.

Am back home from the hospital for the second time. Having really bad time
of it. Don’t anyone ever have theirs done at a military hospital. They did
surgery on Monday at 4 after I sat there for 10 hours. No bed just a recliner.
After surgery, I was brought to ICU. In 2 hrs, I was taken to x-ray and had
to drink the barium stuff and still no water of course. They had put the self
controlled pain pump on my iv and everytime I moved, I hit it accidentally on
rail and overdosed myself on morphine. The next day I was taken to Surgery
Med Floor. There the nursers and staff had no desire to care for me. No one
would help me up to go to bathroom. Punished me by saying my TV was broken and
my phone was broken. On the 3rd day I made my husband go home and get some
rest. I kept telling them the drain was not working. Nothing coming out. Then
on Friday, they sent me home. By Sunday I was back in the emergency room of
a civilian hospital in Las Cruces. No Bariactric surgeons in the town. Got a
Surgeon to finally take the case and let me be admitted. The wound was
infected. Never got any antibiotics and the military hospital.

Got admitted after 12 hrs. The surgeon had to open the wound.
Spent 3 days flushing it and being on iv drip with antibiotics, and pain
meds. Sent me home on Tuesday evening. Still with wound open. Have to flush it
and pack it every six hrs. No fun. Husband taking very good care of me.
Thank God he loves me so much.

Will close. Am exhausted. This infection is really taking a lot out of me.

  15. Jamey Lancaster Says:

Oh, Miki, I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had so much trouble. I’ve known
others with wound issues and infections – it happens, but it’s not any fun
at all. I’m so surprised that the military nurses were so awful. My dad
has had a lot of procedures in the last two years here at Eglin, and they’ve
all been good – I’m sure I would have heard about it, if they hadn’t! – but
I guess you can get miserable people anywhere. Was your surgeon aware of
the treatment you were getting? Thank goodness you could get the civilian
doc to work with you. I’m praying for your quick recovery. It takes a
while for wounds like that to heal, BTW, so just be patient. Thank goodness
your husband is so attentive and caring.

    Fond thoughts and best wishes,

    Pam

Dear Miki: I am so sorry to hear of your difficulties. I am in South Florida
awaiting approval from my insurance company. My Dad was in the Army for 20 years
and I received world class medical and dental care where ever we went. Know that
the hardest part is over and soon you’ll be feeling awesome. Keep us posted as
to how you are doing and tell your husband he’s a man’s man.
