Trying to convince my doctor
Hi everyone, I am new here. I am trying to convince my doctor to let
me have the surgery. I feel this is the last resort and the only way I
will ever truly be happy. I know you are thinking, loosing weight
won’t make you happy but yes, yes it will for me. I am 30 and 5′10"
and 245 pounds, I have tried every diet, diet pill etc. I have spent
and still spend approx $100Cd a month on these pills, its crazy, I
know its crazy but its worth a try I think. I am at the most I have
ever weighed, its horrible. I am a pcw in a nursing home and its
really hard, even the residents call me fat. Duh, like I don’t know
that already. I am hoping he will understand and let me have it, I am
not sure why he is against it, I guess he would rather pop me full of
pills instead. Oh and before you ask, yes, I am already on an anti-
depressant, Effexor 150mg once a day. Well, I have hope that one day I
will truly be happy. Thanks for listening.

Unless you have significant co-morbidities, I’m thinking your doctor
probably won’t recommend it. You are in the obese category, with a BMI of
35.1, and the NIH (National Institutes of Health) recommends surgery for
those who are 40.0 or morbidly obese. They will recommend it for someone
35.0 to 40 if they have significant co-morbidities, like diabetes, sleep
apnea, etc.
Trust me, losing weight does not make you happy - if anything at all, it may
make you more depressed. You will have to deal with your emotional issues
on the side. As you lose, you’ll have to stay on top of the
anti-depressants, because dosage will need to be carefully monitored. You
will be an emotional roller-coaster for quite a while, as malabsorption
causes changes in the serum levels of your drugs. It’s neither pretty nor
fun for most of us who have been on anti-depressive meds.
I know this sounds rough, but this surgery is not to be done because you’re
unhappy, or because you don’t like being overweight. It’s to be done for
your health - and that’s why so many insurances in the US won’t pay for it
unless your BMI is over 40 - at that point, there’s a CHANCE that the
dangers of the surgery and the post-op experience will offset
co-morbidities. In fact, many of us are self-pay, for that very reason.
Our insurances are skittish about it. I paid $21k/us for my surgery, with a
bmi of 43.
You also have to be committed to taking care of your health - there’s a lot
of supplementation that needs to be done. Are you sufficiently compliant to
do the supplementation? You have to honestly ask yourself that. Can you
AFFORD to do the supplementation? Protein drinks and vitamins/minerals?
Good luck!
