Hard to move
Hello,
Anyone suffer with constipation? I had this problem before the surgery and
nothing has changed. My old fiber remedy seems to give me extra gas and I
already have lots these days. I know that we are all different. One friend
said that now she has gone from hardly being able to go at all to barely
getting on the stool and now it floats. I would appreciate some help.

One of the other groups I’m on is having this same discussion. It
seems to be pretty common with us.
Some swear by a tea called smooth moves - find it at the health food
store.
I stopped having problems when I added more magnesium to my diet.
(You should be balancing your calcium intake with magnesium - I
think it’s 2:1 calcium:mag)
Another is using a product called Sculpt and Cleanse (I’ve probably
misspelled that) - but she says she’s not doing the full program,
just takes 3 pills at night, and is fine the next morning.
Another has added colace - 3 pills a day - to her pill regime. YOu
can get the generic for it at walMart - not the laxative, just the
stool softener.
Some do go onto laxitives that their doctors prescribe (Miralax?).
Others use benefiber or vitalady’s liquid fiber - it seems to cause
the least amount of gas.
I think that the slowing down is common to us for a couple of
reasons - one, we tend to run a little dehydrated (are you getting
all your water in?) and I personally think (don’t have any proof
here) that it’s part of our body’s attempts to "help us" get more
nutrition from our "foods" - by slowing downn motility. That’s just
my "fantasy" - but it makes as much sense as anything else I’ve read
LOL.

These are probably both true. A friend of mine swears by an herbal tea from
called TrimMax. It’s marketed as a "diet tea to cleanse toxins" but it’s
really just a laxative. I think it has senna among other things. Do not take
if you are pregnant!

I has just posted about that not long ago. I am pre op
and have a hell of a time going. I was told drink lots
of water exercise and take a stool softener. I was
also told sorry it seems to get worse.

There are a couple of things that can help with constipation. One that
is not usually thought of is increasing one’s intake of magnesium. After
all, we’ve all heard of milk of magnesia, right? Also, Colace (or the
generic), just the one with the stool softener, NOT with the laxative.
And of course, fiber. Different fiber sources can cause gas.
Floating poop is caused by malabsorbed fat. If you do have floaters,
that’s fine. If you don’t, that’s okay too. I know some folks who are
concerned that theirs doesn’t float, but they aren’t eating very much
fat. If you ARE eating a lot of fat and you don’t have floaters, that
might indicate you are absorbing it, but that is so individual, I don’t
worry about it one way or the other. I find pant size a much more useful
indicator.

Thanks for the explanation Eleanor, it’s never been a big deal, but I have
wondered about why things were floating!!
