Not staple line but disruption or tear?

Hi, I had lap RNY almost 2 years ago, I am transected. I have done
wonderfully so far, with no complications to speak of – though I think my
stoma is enlarged as I don’t ever feel full. I eat fairly healthy foods -
no sugar, take all my vitamins, drink most of my protein and don’t each much
fat. Lately I have been dumping on foods that normally sit well (fat free
beans, split pea soup, peanut butter, low fat salad dressing). The dumping
occurs mostly in the evening, lasts for about an hour or so – I go straight
to bed because of the pain and I don’t want my kids to see me suffering. I
also become terribly full and sore below where my pouch is, on the left just
above my belly button. I am wondering if I might have stretched or torn
something below my pouch. Has anyone had experience with this or familiar
with my symptoms. I have stopped eating and am drinking only water decaf
tea and protein – I can even feel discomfort begin with several swallows of
protein and sometimes tea. I appreciate any input you have. I need to
either go to the Dr or stop worrying about it, just not sure which one to

do. Thanks - Shay

    Dear Shay –

I hope you call the doctor right away. There could be any number of things
    that could go wrong.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I’m wondering how you’re defining dumping - usually dumping makes you
nauseous or sleepy - rarely do you hear about it making you in pain. Tell
me, how does water taste? If it’s metallic you may well have an ulcer. You
could still have developed adhesions that are tightening up your stoma. You
definitely need to go to the doctor.
    Good luck, Shay!

Hi Pam, I do get terribly nauseous, want to throw up but nothing will come,
yucky taste under the back of my tongue, get the chills. I get an ache in
my belly, always have when I dumped previously (only 3 times), also get a
sharp pain – I assumed it was the spot where sugar was overwhelming my
intestines. I do usually go to sleep but not because I feel sleepy, but as
a result of trying to relax in a warm dark quiet place. Thanks, Shay

But traditionally we don’t dump on water - usually only on sugar or fats -
and it sounds as though you’re even having problems with water. That usually
is a stoma issue or an ulcer (and rarely could it be a leak - which I guess
could happen, but it would be very rare, given your transected surgery. None
of these options are good… so it definitely, sounds like it’s time for a
    doc to me.

    Hi Everyone,

I called my surgeon, I described my symptoms in detail. He doesn’t think my
symptoms are life threatening – possibly ulcer or maybe gastritis. I have
an appointment to see him next week. I’ll post the outcome. Thank you so
much for being such an amazing resource – I don’t know what I would have
done. I am touched by the thoughtful, informative and concerned replies I
received. Thank goodness for message boards. Thanks - Shay

Shay, it’s important that you make an appointment with your surgeon to
discuss these concerns and symptoms. If you are having pain regularly, that
    should be investigated. Please f/u!
