Water or Coke?

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

We’ve probably all seen this at one time or another, but the "mild
dehydration" message really struck home. Our metabolisms are already screwed
up. Also, some interesting new ways to use coke LOL.

WATER OR COKE?

This is really an eye opener… Water or Coke? We all know

that water is important but I’ve never seen it written

down like this before. WATER

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

slow weight loss

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

greetings

I am 41, female and 4 months post op from r y bypass. I am feeling a
bit like a failure because my weight loss is so much slower than
everyone I’ve read about. I’ve lost 50 lbs in 4 months. Don’t get me
wrong 50 lbs is great but a great deal less than most people have lost
with bypass.I have been stalled at this weight a couple of weeks. Any
good advice to jump start the process?
Also any advice (or books you know of)to the anxious eater on how to
learn to control cravings or urges?

Gastric bypass is no quick fix

Weight-loss surgery is not a magic pill.
That’s a point doctors try to drive home to those who are looking for a
surgical fix to their obesity problem.
"It’s crucial they change their lifestyle, their eating habits," says Dr.
Edward Yatco, a clinical instructor at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla
and a bariatric surgeon at Obesity Surgery Associates in Hawthorne.
"This is not the easy way out. It’s a major surgery that comes with
significant risks and possible complications."
Unfortunately, this message can get lost in the glow of success stories and
miraculous "after" pictures.
In reality, a surgical procedure like gastric bypass (which retools the
digestive system to allow for less calorie absorption) or the newer Lap-Band
(which involves using an adjustable band to limit the amount of food the stomach

I have a question for everyone….

my pouch to the instenines(sp) the pain stops. well my surgeon has dones tests
after test and they all come back normal…to make it short here is the
question….where the pouch is attached to my inteines can it be leaking and
making my bowels back up…((OH YAH I forgot I went to the hospital last night
and they took xrays and the dr there said i was full of bowel((poop))sorry…on
my left side.so i was wondering could i have a small leak some where and that is

Thanks for the kind words!

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

I sincerely appreciate the kind words of support from you!

Congratulations to both of you on your successes so far! You have much
to be proud of, knowing that you’re healthier, feeling better, and
looking better!

Since my last post, I have had my initial consultation for Lap Band.
It wasn’t as bad as I had thought, as my weight is 352. Since my
doctor’s scales hadn’t been able to weigh me in so long, I was certain
I was well over 380. It’s funny, but I told the nurse who was doing my
BMI calculations that 352 was a relief! I had actually lost two pounds
since I went in the first time to start the process of paperwork. (I
think it was only because I hadn’t eaten yet that day, but oh well!)

That leaves me with 180-200 pounds to lose. I know it comes off

Another Newbie Introduction :)

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Greetings to everyone!

My name is Victoria. I’m 28 years old, live in northwest Gerogia, and
am 5′7", 350+. I say "+" because the scales at my doctor’s office
won’t go higher than that. How depressing, huh? I know a lot of you
have been there with me, though.

Much like Diane, I grew up in a house where you ate everything on your
plate, whether you were full or not. Sadly, that was ingrained into my
mind after years of hearing it, and to this day, I eat everything on
my plate whether or not I need it. That, as well as growing up in a
house where the idea of a fun night was sitting on the couch and
watching TV for hours on end…is what has led to the 350+. It’s
amazing how great an effect your upbringing has on your future.

Newbie Introduction

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

Hello Everyone here! I joined the group yesterday and can already
see what a caring and supportive bunch of people you are. I feel
right at home.

My name is Diane and I live in Vancouver, WA (I work in Portland,
OR). I am 49 years young. I am 5′10 and close to 400 pounds. I have
high BP, back pain, joint pain, headaches and aniexity. I am married,
have two dogs, 1 grown son living in CA. I work full time, and my
husband is a wedding minister. On the weekends, we marry people.
Our lives are very busy and full, but for as long as I can remember,
my weight has always caused me grief.

When I was 11 my father would make fun of me because I was fat, but
then fill a huge plate with food for dinner and not allow me to leave
the dinner table until I had eaten it all. In my teenage years, I

Blood donor

Friday, May 18th, 2007

BECAUSE we are at HIGH risk of anemia and need our own stores….ALSO its
taxing on your system to make new cells….I too was disappointed with this
I was a frequent (~every 56 days) donor preop, now I can’t/don’t (I have
battled mild anemia post plastics) My surgeon said NO NEVER again.. NOW IF I
could just get the Red cross to stop calling/and mailing cards about it! LOL
no matter how many times I say I cant they still mail and call!

Endoscopic pouch repair offers a second chance for success

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Each year, about 100,000 morbidly obese people undergo gastric bypass
surgery to help them shed pounds. Because of post-surgery complications,
however, some patients regain much of the weight they lose, and others
regain every pound. Until recently, patients had to endure a second surgery
or live with the fact that their weight-loss surgery had failed them.

Jim Slattery, RN, CGRN, a staff endoscopy nurse at Brigham and Women’s
Hospital in Boston, says a problem develops in as many as 20% of Roux-en-Y
gastric bypass surgeries. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a
restrictive/malabsorptive type of bariatric surgery. During surgery, the
surgeon creates a small pouch in the stomach to restrict food intake.
Ideally, the postoperative patient will feel full more quickly and will stop
eating after ingesting smaller amounts. As a next step, the surgeon attaches
a Y-shaped section of the small intestine to the pouch to allow food to
bypass the lower stomach and part of the small intestine. This reduces the
