pre-op nov/28-surgery Dec14/05

Hi all, just an update. I was denied for out of country coverage for a
2nd time by OHOP (who I work for), so I decided to self-pay and cashed
in my retirement funds. My pre-op went well and my open Roux-en-Y is
to be done on Dec/14/05 at the Barix Clinic in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Thanks for all the information the group has provided, and any other
tips or hints for post surgery will be appreciated

Hi, Anne! I totally understand your decision - I basically did the same
thing. Figured I wouldn’t be around long enough to enjoy a retirement at the
weight I was. Wow, your surgery is soon. Did the docs ask you to stay
pretty low carb between now and then? That’s usually to help reduce your
liver so that they don’t have as much trouble getting around in there.

Be sure to get copies of your preop blood work so you can start your
    spreadsheet of lab values.

There’s a whole list of things that you may or may not need for surgery. I
found that chapstick for my lips was good, because I got dehydrated easily.

I didn’t have any problems "reaching" with personal hygiene, but if you do,
then a pair of tongs to hold the toilet paper right at first would be good.

I needed a pillow to hold on my lap on the way home from the hospital (my
"way home" was a 5 hour drive) - it was also good to hold against my surgery
area if I needed to cough or sneeze.

I stocked up on the foods I would need to have that first week (was really
tired the first week, but back to work the second! Recovery was fast for a
Lap RNY. It’ll be a bit longer for an Open ) -

I also found that it was more comfortable to sleep in the recliner the first
few nights. Some just sleep with extra pillows.

I was fine using an extra hospital gown as a robe, but I was in Atlanta, I
imagine it will be chillier I Ypsilanti <G>.

Be sure to get up and walk, and use that little thing you blow into - help
prevent blood clots and get the lungs working, so you don’t get pneumonia

Some hospitals are better equipped than others. You might want to take an
overnight kit with your favorite toiletries.

I’m sure there are things I’m forgetting.. But these were the most
important to me. Just set yourself up so that you don’t have to DO anything
for a couple of weeks - don’t have to lift anything heavier than 5 lbs, etc.
Take this time to pamper yourself.

    Hey guys,
I purchased several protein products, some from GNC others from the web. So
far I have made bad choices but did not want to through away money. To make
the shakes tolerable, I use my juicer to add fresh pineapple, apple and
carrot and sometimes ginger. Am I defeating the purpose? Am I adding too
many calories? I sure hope not. My arms are starting not to ache like
before when I was getting only 15gms. Boy to think that I knew it all and
then discern that the 2 tablespoons of Proteinex would be enough. As the
saying goes, never to old to learn. And did I learn the hard way.

    Have a good day all,
    Yvonne

Yes, you’re adding sugar. You will become acclimated to the sugar and then
you won’t have dumping to keep you on the straight and narrow. And the
extra sugar will slow down your weight loss.

GNC will allow you to return protein opened.

That way you don’t get caught with cans you can’t use.

    Thanx Pam,

Not what I wanted to hear but you keep us on a straight path. I have often
heard you talk about the protein shakes from Vita Lady so I will give them a
try. I will start out with the samples first.

    She’s got, like 84 varieties <G>.
My favorites are the IDS flavors, the Champion Pure Whey stack Choc
and banana, the Champion Proscore 100 choc, (my base shake is the
PWS choc and PS100 choc, half and half), the Nectars and the Protein
    Delites.
Each sample is one serving, mix with 4-6 oz of water and either
    shake or blend.
