Advice please (I am so new to all this…)
Hi
This is my first post to the group and I have really found it helpful
to read the messages…I just wanted to share that right now I am
feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the information and I am at a
point in the consultations with my doctor where I think that I am
going to be making the decision to get banded. I just feel that I
have read a lot of conflicting information, I am worried about the
fills, how to know what i will need, I feel like I am absolutely in
the dark about so much of what being banded implies. Just generally
very worried!
I live in Argentina although I am from the UK and I just want to make
a comprehensive list of questions to ask my doctor when I go to see
him next, although to be honest it is so mindboggling I don´t know
where to start.
Did anyone else feel like this? Completely like my head will explode
and not sure about doing or saying things in case I ask the wrong
thing, or what SHOULD I be asking???
Any messages of support would be greatly appreciated. I will keep
reading and searching the internet for information - my main fear is
that if I get banded then if they don´t do it right or the fill thing
then I will just eat like normal and I won´t lose weight. Or that I
won´t know what or when to eat after the operation, and how to make
sure I have enough fluids or not get nutricional deficiencies - and
there is a thing on the outside of the body they can inject saline
into? Does it show if I am just in bra and knickers? (and will my
partner see if if we are being intimate!) sorry for the detailed
questions!
Well, I am sure I haven´t explained myself very well but I am just
beginning to find out about this procedure and have absolutely no
experience of it, nor have friends who have had it done…
Many thanks for taking time to read this far,
Lulu

Dear Lulu: The feelings that you are having are normal. I struggled with my
decision for three years before I finally committed and had the surgery. I
choose the Laproscopic RBY Gastric Bypass. I weighed 398 pounds in July of last
year and am now down to 250 pounds.
It is my understanding that with the Lap band the adjustment port will be
placed on your side just under the skin. A dimple might be evident, but not
overly obvious.
The hardest part is over as it seems you have decided to take control of your
life. Everything from here on will be better. I cannot beleive how much for
the better that my life has changed.
Hang in there and remain positive.

Lulu,
I was banded last November. I’ll be happy to discuss my experience
with you.
I do have to answer one of your questions, though, concerning the
port. No, you can’t see it. It’s underneath your skin, sewn into your
abdominal wall. The only thing that is visible from the outside are
scars from five incision sites. Those aren’t even bad, though. Four
of mine are less than a half inch long. The largest one is about the
size of my pinky finger. After you start losing a good amount of fat
from your abdominal area, the port can easily be felt underneath the
skin. It’s not really a big deal. I can certainly handle a piece of
plastic in my guts if it helps to make the rest of me healthier!
I know some people have a very hard time with the band or with RNY
and regret their decisions. I’m glad to say I’m not one of those
people. I would do it again in two shakes of a lamb’s tail! I really
don’t think all the money in the world could ever sway me to have it
removed. It has all been very worthwhile so far, and I’m looking
forward to continuing to improve my health and well-being.
Hope we can chat sometime soon!
