starting to consider weight loss surgery more seriously…

Hi Everyone!

I’m brand new to this group. I’ve been thinking a bit
more, lately, about possibly having surgery - bypass
maybe, though I’m leaning towards lap band. It feels
like such a sobering, drastic measure to have weight
loss surgery, and yet, how much longer will I be
willing to live like I have been? I’m 44 years old,
overweight to some degree since age 11, and currently
I’m about 300 pounds - at 5′2".

If any of you care to share what finally made up your
mind to go ahead with surgery, I’d be so glad to hear
your points of view!

If I’m not losing weight, I’m gaining. There seems to
be no such thing as "holding steady" in my book. I
haven’t attempted to diet in years, although from time
to time I try to eat more sensibly. As it is, I go
through a fast food drive-through usually once a day,
minimum, if not twice. I rarely eat vegetables and
fruits though I know better.

I’m blabbing, but I’d truly be grateful to hear what
anyone who’s taken the plunge cares to share with
someone like me who’s considering doing the same.

Many thanks!
Kathy in California

    Hi Kathy-
I think it is wonderful that you are considering the surgery. In all truth, my
reasoning behind my surgery was to be healthy for me and my child. I know alot
of people think that obese people are using this surgery as a quick way to lose
weight, but in all truth, it isn’t. Surgery is a life-threatening procedure, so
don’t go into it thinking this will be easy, just know that you are doing this
to better yourself. I have been on a long road (about 2 years, and this doesn’t
happen for everyone either) to gastric bypass, but my will keeps me going that
this is the way to go. I have a terrible time losing weight, the doctors and
myself have tried many things. Many people have doubted my decision and many
have supported the idea. Just know that the road will be bumpy, but eventually
you will get to where you want to be if you decide to go with surgery. I think
the best thing to say to someone that is considering surgery though is that you
need to love yourself first, don’t do this
because you think others will love you more, do this for YOU.

    Tara,

Thanks very much for your thoughts on this and sharing
your story. You have already had the surgery after
thinking about it for 2 years, you mean? Or you’re 2
years post surgery as of now?

In any case, you have good reasons behind the why, I
agree! It’s difficult for me because I’ve let my
spirit and hopes sink pretty low,so it’s hard to
picture anything better to come out of anything, at
this point, but that’s my own cop out and I do want to
start to be pro-active in my life.

    Thank you again, Tara!

    Hi Kathy-
Actually I have not had my surgery yet, I have been in the waiting for 2
years. I was so close, I had my surgery date and then they postponed it a week
before I was to go in. Now they are saying I need to wait until May. Everything
can be frustrating when going through this, but you need to keep your spirit
through it all, even if you don’t have the surgery. Remember who you are and
what YOU need in life. God bless and take care.

Hello Kathy my name is Donna and I am new to this group. I having
been a yo-yo for years is what I call myself I will lose some then
gain what i lost and then some more. I saw my mom go through it 3
years ago and now I am bigger then what she ever got to so I went to
my doctor and I siad I need to get help with getting heathly for me
and my kids. I want to wake up to my husband every day and be able
to play with my kids. I am only 28 I have a lot of years left to be
living. So I have been doing some home work on this and the doctor
and me and my husband had a meeting and we all think I should do the
diet. I do workout 3 times a week at a women’s workout place and
will still after. I knew I wanted to do this to help me get to a
heathy life and yes I know it will be work but as long as I can live
longer great:) I look at a lot of sites and read stories and things
like that, maybe go talk to you doctor and come up with a plan. Good
luck with what you go with :)
