Dear all,
I thank you so much for the messages, it has been such a help to me.
The problem I have right now is that my insurance company have some
criteria I need to fulfil to get funding for a gastric band operation.
They treat acute conditions, but consider obesity a chronic
condition. They will fund me if I have other co-morbidities or other
symptoms but at the moment I don´t.
They have requested a medical report, and this is the bit I am not
understanding very well…
"the reason that we have requested a medical report is because, as you
point out, this does seem to be treatment to cure an acute condition,
however it would be unusual to authorise bariatric surgery, so we need

Hi
This is my first post to the group and I have really found it helpful
to read the messages…I just wanted to share that right now I am
feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the information and I am at a
point in the consultations with my doctor where I think that I am
going to be making the decision to get banded. I just feel that I
have read a lot of conflicting information, I am worried about the
fills, how to know what i will need, I feel like I am absolutely in
the dark about so much of what being banded implies. Just generally
very worried!
I live in Argentina although I am from the UK and I just want to make
a comprehensive list of questions to ask my doctor when I go to see
him next, although to be honest it is so mindboggling I don´t know
where to start.

Hibernation Syndrome
After WLS, you may be feeling tired and become depressed. When you are
several weeks post op, and are either on a liquid diet or you are eating
many fewer calories than you were pre op, this depression and inactivity
can become more pronounced. All you want to do is sleep, you may have
crying spells, you may begin to believe that the surgery was a mistake,
or you may think ‘what in the world have I done to myself?’
All these feelings are completely normal and, to a certain extent, are
to be expected. The low number of calories you are eating produces what
many of us call the ‘hibernation syndrome’ and your depression and
feelings of despair, are a direct result.

hi everyone, I am very discouraged, My first post op appointment 11
days after surgery I had lost 20 lbs, 2nd post op 1 month later only 2
lbs. My doctor says to increase exercise, and I am retaining water in
my legs, so now I have to take a water pill. Has anyone else gone thru
this. I am doing everything the doctor has told me to do. any advice
would be welcome.
thanks,
Lynn

Don’t know if this is OK to post but you should check out the monthly
newspaper "Beyond Change." It’s sent to your home. They have a web
site: www.beyondchange-obesity.com and I think this is the best, by
far, publication out there. They don’t sell you anything - just give
you outstanding advice and resources.

Hi, thanks for the info. No, I’m not in the military. I moved here 17
yrs ago to nurse my sick mother. She died 5 yrs ago and I’m still here
because there’s nothing to go back to in Boston anymore (moreover, in
the meantime I married, had two daughters, divorced…..).
I guess I’ll have to settle for feeling displaced.
I’m exausting all my options here trying to find procedures, doctors,
hospitals and if my insurance would even cover anything. I don’t have
any concrete answers yet.
Can you or anybody tell me what is the standard minimal BMI allowed
for WLS?
~P.
